Early Work
In January 2002, we were able to run a POWER Personal Development course offered by Maggie O'Carroll from Train 2000 Ltd.
Claire Campbell, from Wild Women, delivered the course over a seven-week period. Women and girls who attended the course were able to access childcare at Doves Nursery through Sure Start. This not only gave them a necessary break but also enabled the children to make new friends. Three of these women then went on to do hair extension courses at Bolton College and are now receiving further support from Elect and Train 2000 with a view to becoming self-employed.
This group of women and girls were aged from sixteen to over forty.
One of the women we worked with originated from Mozambique, South Africa. Her fear was being deported back to an abusive partner from whom it had taken her years to escape. Eventually, we took her to see our MP, Bob Waring, about the issue of immigration and, within a few months, the matter was resolved successfully. This woman, as well as other women and girls, continue to receive our support to enable them to make choices and realise their ambitions and goals which will, hopefully, prevent them from entering into, or returning to, abusive relationships.
Two of our clients have now entered full time college to study hair and beauty therapy. They have now moved on considerably with their lives.
